Pro Corda West

Pro Corda West for string, piano and wind players, aged 8-18, focuses on the key elements of chamber music alongside sessions in Dalcroze Eurhythmics, improvisation and composition.

Spanning eight days, the course is making an exciting move to Monmouth School for Girls next August. The site is very compact, with musical activities all taking place in one building – the new Performing Arts Centre, with its lovely recital hall, many chamber music and practice rooms and a dance/movement studio.

All the leisure facilities (swimming pool, tennis courts, playing fields) are very close to the boarding houses. Those coming from further East will find that the road network allows you to get to Monmouth in the same time as to Wells, and we hope that students from the Welsh borders and points West will come and join us!

The course includes:

  • Daily chamber music sessions - to prepare and perform works by a range of composers.
  • Creative musicianship - through Dalcroze Eurhythmics and improvisation leading to composition.
  • Performance opportunities - including house concerts and end of course presentation.
  • Chamber orchestra
  • Wide range of leisure activities including swimming

All Pro Corda courses have excellent pastoral care, and this comes partly from the relatively small numbers on the course due to the emphasis on chamber music and partly from the expertise and experience of the pastoral staff. All staff are chosen for their experience and empathy with this age group, and students and parents alike will find us warm and welcoming.

Monmouth is a lovely town, with stunning scenery all around, and we feel the students will benefit from the compact nature of the school site.

The director of the course is Anita Strevens – well known chamber musician, Dalcroze Eurhythmics expert and cello teacher. She plays in Accordare Quartet, Trio Vita and has a duo partnership with Helen Crayford, piano. Anita was Cello Consultant for the new ABRSM syllabus. She also directs the Pro Corda Preparatory Course.
